Affiliate Marketing for Beginners - A Step by Step Guide to Making Money on the Internet

Affiliate Marketing for Beginners - A Step by Step Guide to Making Money on the Internet By Edward Aigbokhae Affiliate marketing, I strongly believe, is the fastest way beginners can start an internet business and make money online. This affiliate marketing for beginners guide will walk you through the steps to follow. As an affiliate marketer, you don't have to worry about creating a product or service to sell right from the start. All what you will be concerned with to succeed is pre-selling and marketing the merchant's product to your target audience by simply highlighting the products benefits. But your first investment should be to register a domain name and sign up with a web hosting service provider. You will do better online by promoting other merchants products and services by having your own domain name and signing up for a web hosting account. It will greatly help you to reach your target audience with ease. This will not cost you more than $20 in your first month of starting an online business. With consistent action taking by you on a daily basis, you will be able to make profits at the close of your first month in business after taking care of your internet business expenses/costs. However, many beginners who are working within a tight budget can also go through the free route of using free blogs and web 2.0 properties to start an affiliate marketing business. Unfortunately, this will not offer you enough flexibility as much as having your own domain name and website for a number of reasons. Your question now will be, "What are the requirements of becoming a super affiliate marketer?" It is as simple as you can imagine! Simply learn and master how to pre-sell and promote the merchant's product benefits to your target prospective buyers without giving away all the information. If you ask me, it is simple to learn how to pre-sell by reading experts articles on specific topics from related blogs and article directories and adapt it to your business without plagiarizing someone else's work. Here are the steps you should always follow when you want to choose a product to promote in order to earn affiliate sales commission. First, research and choose a niche market with hungry buyers. That is to select a highly targeted niche market with burning problem to solve. It doesn't necessarily have to be an internet marketing niche when you are joining an affiliate program to promote products and services. Lots of beginners make the mistake of starting out with "make money online" niche which is keenly dominated by internet marketing gurus. Secondly, select an affiliate product that will solve the problem you have identified in the niche market above. And the best way to know if a product will be able to solve a specific problem, want or need is to use it yourself or get other real users experience with the product. There are popular affiliate networks like ClickBank.com, CJ.com, Amazon.com, etc, where you can choose lots of products to start with. The next step is for you to conduct keyword research to determine the market demand for a solution to the problem you have identified above. This exercise is critical to your success because you don't want to dissipate your time, energy and money on a market that will not be responsive. Good enough, there are free and paid keyword research tools anyone can use to confirm the demand in any market. While the free keyword tool is good to start with as a beginner, it could be time consuming when you want to analyze the market competition as fast as possible for each keyword phrase you find. Next, determine the market competition for each keyword phrase you decide to go with from your research. If you don't want to be eaten up by "internet marketing sharks," it is important you hand-pick only long tail keyword phrases with low or weak competition. With a handful of carefully selected long tail keyword phrases you can start writing quality articles which you are going to use to promote the affiliate product on your blog, website or article directories. Publishing and marketing affiliate products using quality and unique articles work great but there are also other methods of promoting affiliate products and services. As you can see, making money online involves a lot of hard work and smart work but it is, by far, better than day job hassles. So, you can get on the train now and start an online business of your own as you have read this affiliate marketing for beginners' article. Meanwhile, you can download a free ebook writing guide by subscribing to our free internet marketing training course at make passive income online website and blog. You will be glad you did! Internet Marketing for Beginners Made Easy

Internet Marketing For Beginners Made Easy By Duane P Flowers Expert Author Duane P Flowers Internet marketing for beginners certainly presents quite a puzzle. This is because in theory the factors behind marketing on the Net can be quite plain, however the implementation of valuable strategies can be tremendously complicated. This is even tough for those who have considerable experience in the field of Internet marketing. Bearing this in mind, this article will try to clarify the idea of Internet marketing for beginners and outline certain basic techniques which can support a businessman in presenting his own Internet marketing campaign. We will tackle concepts like placing banner ads, creating a website, orchestrating an email marketing campaign optimizing your website for search engines and sending out e-newsletters. One of the standard steps in beginning a marketing campaign is to produce a website. If you don't have a website or have a disappointingly constructed website you must consider re-designing or creating a new website to appropriately promote your products. If you do not have knowledge in web design, there are many software packages which are simple for those who have no design capabilities in creating operational websites. Hiring a web designer is advisable, too, since he can design a website that is functional, attractive and very suited to your services and products. He can also assist you in including more developed features on your website and overall marketing. For beginners this can be extremely valuable. Banner ads are an additional option in marketing your business on the Internet. Banner ads are advertisements which normally appear at the top of a website. But they may also contain smaller ads in another location. Banner ads usually include text and graphics which tempt Internet users to click on the advertisement. These users are then directed to your website once a user clicks on your banner ads. This kind of advertising can be very effective if you are careful in placing the advertisements on high traffic websites which draw an audience with some curiosity in your Internet marketing. For beginners, again, experience goes a long way towards succeeding in the wonderful world of online marketing. Finally, optimizing your website for search engines is an important factor of Internet marketing. For beginners, as well as more seasoned experts, a little bit of knowledge in this area can go a long way. Search engines rank websites based on quality and relevance for specific search terms. Many Internet users acknowledge the efforts made by the search engines to appropriately sort the wealth of information available. They use these search engines to look for the best websites on a particular topic. Internet marketing for beginners doesn't have to be a grueling and painstaking process... with a little bit of effort the necessary experience will soon follow, and you will be on your way to the success you dream of. For More Information Duane Flowers invites you to see if you've got what it takes to succeed in the fascinating world of Internet Marketing. 3 Very Important Affiliate Marketing Tips For Beginners.

3 Very Important Affiliate Marketing Tips For Beginners By Yvette Munro Well that's not how it works. Not if you want a long term, sustainable income. So below I am going to share with you 3 very important tips to help you start off the right way. Learn The Business Before you start an affiliate marketing business you need to know and understand how it works. You need to find out what you should expect. You need to know what obstacles or pitfalls might slow you down. You need to have a clear understand of what affiliate marketing is and how it works. You also need to know what affiliate marketing is not. You won't get paid just because you advertise a certain product. You only get paid when a sale is made through your affiliate link. It is very important you learn how to track your leads so you know exactly what's working and what's not working. Start Building A List From Day One While affiliate marketing is a great way to start making money online, there is just one downfall. You don't get the contact information of the buyer. That goes to the vendor. All successful affiliates have one thing in common, they all have built massive lists that are extremely responsive. If you want to maximize your earning potential you must start building a list from day one. There are a lot of great email marketing services you can use. The most popular ones are Get Response, Aweber, Constant Contact and iContact. You can use any one of these. Once you sign up you will need to create a web form to place on your site or blog. That web form will be used to collect the names and email addresses of your visitors. Once you have their name and email address you will be able to market products to them over and over again. And that my friend is where the real money comes in. Promote Quality Products This is a very important tip. Many times beginners will get caught up in the commission only. They never actually research the product to see if it will add value to their subscribers lives. As an affiliate marketer your number one goal should be to help people. To add real value to their lives. When you do that you will have no problem making money. So don't focus on the commission. Because even if a product has a high commission, it won't do you any good if everyone is requesting a refund. Be an affiliate marketer with integrity. If people see your main objective is to actually help them, they will pretty much purchase anything you recommend. So if you want to be one of the top earning affiliates, always put people first. Not your commissions. How to Start Making Money With ClickBank

How to Start Making Money With ClickBank

Expert Author J Leuty
Making money with ClickBank can be pretty easy, as long as you know what you are doing. In a nutshell, it simply involves doing some simple and duplicable steps that I will explain in this article. Making money with ClickBank can sometimes appear to be very hard, but it doesn't have to be, there are definitely no "secrets" to it.
Based on my affiliate marketing experiences, as long as you know what you are doing ANYBODY can make money with ClickBank. However, there is a process which you need to learn and follow, so lets begin!
Step 1. Creating Your ClickBank Account.
In order to sell ClickBank products, the first thing you need to do is to register as a ClickBank affiliate, and to do this you need to create your free affiliate account by following the next few easy steps in the process:
a). Go to ClickBank.com and complete the ClickBank affiliate sign up form. This will only take you a few minutes. It is a straightforward thing to do, just follow the instructions on ClickBank.com. It is important to make sure your contact details (email) are correct as ClickBank will confirm your affiliate account by email.
b). Once you receive your affiliate account confirmation email, click the link within the email and this will bring you to the confirmation page. This is where you can log-in via the log-in link at the top of the page.
When you have logged in you will then be taken to your account homepage, where you can keep track of your sales and earnings. Once here, you just need to enter some info in the Payment information section. There are 2 parts to this section, one for your preferred payment method, and the other for your payment thresholds. Payment method gives you the option to choose how you would like to receive your commissions. However, new affiliates can only receive their commissions by check, until they have made some consistent sales.
The Payment Threshold is the minimum amount you will need to earn in commissions before ClickBank will send your payment. You can edit this by clicking the edit link located in the top right hand corner of the payment information area.
Step 2. How to Select Your ClickBank Product.
Now, obviously selecting the right ClickBank product to promote includes some other important steps you will eventually need to explore, such as keyword research. As keyword research is outside of the remit of this article, and is a complete subject on it's own, you can find out more and read some of my keyword research articles by clicking the link contained in my author bio at the end of this article.
Now, back to the ClickBank Marketplace. On the My Account Homepage you will notice a link at the top of the page called "Marketplace." Click on it! You will now see a list of product categories, from which you can choose a product to sell. So choose a category and we can move onto the next stage of the process.
Assuming you have chosen a category, you should now be looking at a list of product results, now you need to take a number of factors into account BEFORE making your product choice, such as:
1. Gravity. - This tells you how many affiliates are making money with the product. I recommend choosing products with a gravity of 300 or more.
2. Avg %/Sale. - This gives you the average amount of commission that vendors will offer for each sale. I recommend promoting ClickBank products that offer 50% commission or more.
3. Avg Rebill. - This tells you whether or not this product is a subscription product or not. I recommend only choosing the products that will pay you a recurring monthly income, so ONLY choose a product that has a $15 or more rebill total in this field, because this means you will get paid this amount over and over again.
Now that you have selected your ClickBank product using the criteria above, you need create your unique affiliate link to begin promoting. ClickBank call this a "Hoplink".
To create your "Hoplink" you need to do the following (Don't worry this is easy):
1. Click the "Promote" button next to the product you have chosen.
2. On the next page called "Affiliate Program: Promote Products for (Vendor name)". You need to enter your account nickname (ID) then click "Create", and you will be presented with 2 affiliate links (Hoplink). You should copy these links and paste into an excel spreadsheet on your computer. Remember these are YOUR AFFILIATE LINKS that you will use for promotion and are how you get paid for each sale, so look after them as ClickBank will not store them for you.
You will notice that their are two Hoplinks, but unless you are a web designer with HTML coding knowledge, you should only need to use the shorter version (usually with the black font as opposed to the longer one in blue)
How to Start Making Money With ClickBank - Step 3.
Promoting Your Chosen Product.
So you should now have your FREE ClickBank account created with your first Hoplink to promote. There are many marketing methods you can choose, but beware of "marketing method overload" particularly if you are a newbie. This is when you try to master all marketing methods at once, and do not achieve your goals as you don't become competent at any.
So my advice is to choose a marketing method you are comfortable with, become a master at it, then move onto the next.
To start your making money with ClickBank journey, I highly recommend using Article marketing and Free Social Media to start with, particularly if you are on a limited budget, and especially if you have time as opposed to money.
However, if you are looking for fast results from your marketing, and you can spend some money, then paid advertising is the way to go, such as PPC or Solo-ads. There are far too many marketing methods to go into in this Article, but to find out more, simply click on the link to my blog contained in the author bio at the end of this article.
So there you have it, a quick and easy way for you to start making money with ClickBank, once you begin, if you are anything like me you will be astounded at just how easy it is to make money with ClickBank, and continuously add multiple streams of internet income to your bank accounts.

How To Become a Success With Affiliate Marketing

How To Become a Success With Affiliate Marketing

Expert Author Marisa Freyer
Contrary to popular belief, there are only three real ways to make money online: Selling your own products or service; Network Marketing; or Affiliate Marketing. Of course if you count gambling that's four, but let's stick to non-addictive activities.
Affiliate Marketing is certainly a great way to make cash online and has become a popular choice for those looking to ditch the day job and start working from home. But unfortunately it's extremely competitive, and so in order to be successful, you have to understand the needs of the market, learn to promote products, and what works or doesn't work.
How to get started
1. Choose a niche, or multiple niches if you want. As an affiliate marketer you are matching products with customers, so don't sell beef to vegetarians - they won't buy it.
2. It's important that the affiliate program is reputable and must pay a decent commission for each sale. Most programs pay 10-40% commissions, but in the last couple of years many programs, especially in home business niche, have started paying 100% commissions. I would rather sell 4 products at $200 than 100 products at $20. The program should pay you regularly so that you can earn a decent income.
3. Change your perception. Many people have this idea that it's very easy to make money online... There is the stereo-type of the online marketer hanging around the house in their pajamas earning money effortlessly. This idea also plays into the hands of opportunistic marketers who use this claim to bait easy prey. They sell this idea to unsuspecting potential customers who then become disillusioned when they haven't made thousands on autopilot after 1 week! Change your perception!
Like any business an online business is hard work. The 'money on auto-pilot' phrase comes from the more experienced online marketers and affiliate marketers. After putting in the hard work up front - learning and training, driving traffic and establishing working relationship, these established marketers certainly work far fewer hours. Why? Because they make residual income from the ASSET they have built. Your online business is an Asset that you must build.
So as an affiliate marketer you need to work hard and be dedicated in order to build the successful business that you crave.
4. Start with a good marketing system and training programme. No successful marketer has ever achieved anything without training, tools, systems and support. The most expensive word in online marketing is FREE... because it will cost you a lot more in the long run.
An online business is the cheapest business you can buy/start, but it's not free. You must enable yourself with quality systems and training and have the mindset of a true successful entrepreneur. If you do this then failure is no longer an option for you.

Internet Marketing - Making Money Online "The Start"

Internet Marketing - Making Money Online "The Start"

Expert Author Kim L Matheson
It is most likely that your interest in the internet as the platform for your new venture starts with a very compelling reason. Some situation in your life is driving you to look for a new and better way. Most people tell me it is one of the following reasons;
1. I need to find a way to make some extra money.
2. I want to give up my job because I am going no where.
3. I want to work for myself.
4. I want a better lifestyle for my family.
5. I want the flexibility to work when I want.
6. I want to sell my offline products online like the big boys.
7. I need to expand my offline business.
If this sounds like part of you and I am sure it does then lets have a look at how an internet based business is going to suit you.
If you need to make a little bit of extra money by creating an online business then you may be disappointed. How so? Well if you set it up correctly and learn and apply the skills necessary and you work hard at developing your business then you can make a ton of money. The sky is the limit. There are no boundaries to hold you back from being a super achiever.
If you have a job and feel like you are going no where you are probably right. A job stands for "Just Over Broke" and do not think for one minute most bosses will pay you enough to accumulate enough money to leave and start something. The only way you are going to make bucket loads of money and have some real choices in this life is to get off your backside, get motivated in a big way, learn the skills necessary, and start your internet career.
If you always fancied working for yourself, then starting an internet career is the most cost effective way of starting your own business. After all what do you really need?
- a computer preferably a laptop so you are mobile.
- a domain name.
- a hosting account.
- an auto responder.
- a landing page.
- the skills necessary to create your internet presence.
- SEO (traffic)
None of these belong in the rocket science world or require the bank balance of a Boss. You can fund and create your business over time as you learn the skills. The sad part is you may still have to stick with your day job until the cash starts rolling. Just another motivator to keep you focused and on track.
It's a neat strategy to involve your partner and family as much as possible. They can help with giving you some quiet time as you learn the skills. Family support is like having a great cheer squad on your side, and if they can embrace your vision and see your goals being achieved one by one you will be driven to succeed.
Because your business is completely contained in your laptop where you go it goes and so does your business. You can be at home, in a hotel, an airport, where ever you have internet connection you can conduct your business. The time of day doesn't matter because you are likely to have potential clients in multiple time zones all around the world. Now you can pick up or drop off your children at school, go to watch them play sport, take your partner out for a coffee, what ever you want, you can work to suit your family. How neat is that.
If you have an offline business and your competitors are selling their products online in your area don't get mad, get even. Get yourself an online presence and compete with them for the sales on an even playing field. Go one step ahead and beat them at the sales game by interacting with your online clients better, and more often. Offer your clients special deals with an up sell. Create a USP (unique sales position) that blows the big companies away. Create some value added give aways or some ways for the clients to get the most use out of your product. Let them know when a new product is coming out with may be a pre release purchase order at a special price. Lots of ways to use the internet to boost your offline business sales.
An internet sales platform for an offline business is the easiest and fastest way to grow your sales volume and client base. It is also cheap, quick and you can change your marketing strategy quickly. If a sales pitch is not working change straight away. Try two different sales programs at the same time. Test and measure. Test and measure. If you go really well you might even be able to downsize your offline presence and still grow your bottom line.
Well, the only thing stopping all of this happening is you "starting". What are you waiting for? There will always be room out there for another budding millionaire.
If you are interested in starting an internet business then you need to understand the process of the structure of set up. Once the set up and key ingredients are sorted like your domain name, hosting account, auto responder and landing page. You are ready to drive traffic and implement search engine optimisation both paid and free.

20 ideas to make money online

20 ideas to make money online

Harpreet Singh       Edition: February 2011
A cash cow for the enterprising, the Internet is littered with opportunities to make a fast buck. While it rarely qualifies as a solitary source of income, the Net can easily help you supplement it. However, the amount you earn depends on the time and effort invested. Go through these 20 options and find out which ones work for you.

Blogging
If you're a passionate closet writer who wants to be published but can't find a way to do so, make each keystroke your way to wealth by penning your own blog. Starting a blog doesn't require extensive technical skills but it's important that you have expertise in the field you are writing on. This will attract visitors to your site. Building a large following will enable you to earn profit by luring advertisers, writing paid reviews or getting commissions for promoting other people's products.

Paid Writing
If maintaining a blog is difficult for you but you still want to indulge your passion for writing, you can jot down articles for other blogs or sites such as Weblogs, Helium or PayPerPost. Writing an e-book can also be a good option. E-books are investment free, with no cost for printing and shipping. If you have a strong command over languages, you can become a copy editor, where Webmasters will pay you to read articles and correct grammatical errors, sentence fragments, etc.

e-tuitions/Webinars
The demand for tutors is high and growing. So, if you like helping others learn, e-teaching could be the earning ticket for you. All you need to become an online tutor is expertise in your subject and a few spare hours per week. TutorVista, e-tutor, SmartThinking and Tutor.com are some of the sites you can enroll with. If you gain a good reputation as a coach, you could even conduct Webinars-lectures or seminars transmitted over the Net. College and university students are willing to pay to gain entry to a well-respected Webinar.

Affilliate/Reseller
For those who have the knack of selling, one of the best ways to make money online is to become an affiliate/reseller. An affiliate is a person who gets a commission for selling every product that he promotes, whether on his Website or through any other avenue such as eBay. You don't have to own the product. You only need to sign up for an affiliate program with a company and start selling its products under your referral link. Firms such as Commission Junction or Click Bank have a large pool of products.

Buying/Selling domains
Buying and selling domain names is another way to make money from home and requires very little investment or time. You can buy domains at their registration prices or even cheaper and trade them at a profit. However, always research on sites such as sedo.co.uk, afternic.com, ebay.com or other domain auction sites to get an estimate of the hottest selling names. The best way to find good ones is to use terminated domain lists, which contain several expired names that are back in the pool.

Freelancing for Professionals
Freelancing is a great option for professionals who are experts in their respective trades and know how to ensure customer satisfaction. Various freelancing and project-oriented sites allow companies that need help to describe their projects. Freelancers and small businesses offer bids, ideas or proposals, from which the buyers can choose what they find most suitable. Websites such as Elance cover everything from programming and writing to data entry and design, while RentACoder focuses on software programming.

Advertising
You can sell space on your Website or blog for advertisements and you earn when these ads are clicked by visitors to your site. The sorting and placing of ads is free. The profitability of pay-per-click advertising depends on the traffic level of the Website and, most importantly, on the clickthrough rate and cost per click. Google AdSense is the most popular option, while others are BidVertiser, Text Link Ads and Blogads. Direct banner and RSS feed are some other forms of online advertising.

GPT Programme
GPT or Get-paid-to sites are becoming increasingly popular among teens. You get paid for signing up for free Websites, newsletters, playing games and filling out online surveys. These are suitable for people who don't have a skill set but want to earn extra money. Taking online surveys is simple- register with a few legitimate, paid survey sites and answer questions. The topics range from shopping to politics. This might not help you make a living, but you can earn good pocket money. Contests2win is one of the trusted GPT Websites.

Online Marketing
Once a Website is created and optimised for search engine (SEO), the SEM or Search Engine Marketing begins. A treasure trove lies hidden here. An SEO/SEM expert, who is responsible for marketing a Website, can promote it in various ways. These include article marketing, writing press releases, forum posting, blog posting, submitting your site to directories and search engines, social bookmarking, etc. Most companies don't do this in-house and pay you to conduct the SEM for them.

Making themes
As more and more people seek an online presence, the demand for Website templates and WordPress (Blog) themes will keep increasing. If you are good at Web designing and coding, you can earn a lot from designing Web themes. In this segment, there are mainstream Websites, such as TemplateMonster and ThemeForest, which act as a marketplace where you can sell your themes. Templates are sold and priced depending on the rights and features that are bundled with them.

Selling photos
If you enjoy photography and are good with a camera, you could be sitting on a huge reserve of revenue. There are people who will be interested in your collection of images. Nowadays, it's easy to take your photos to the public, providing a convenient way to build a secondary income stream. Many stock photo agencies, such as Fotolia, Dreamstime and Shutterstock, offer incentives for people to earn from their photos.

Support & service
Providing coding or fixing other Webmasters' issues is another great way to earn extra bucks. There are simple jobs ranging from adding a script to setting up sites, but knowledge of Web coding is essential. One can offer support for Web CMS (content management systems) like Drupal or Joomla. After you are comfortable with your own installation, you can help other people to set these up and configure them.

Stock/forex trading
Joining the stock/forex market may seem a bit risky. However, you can start small and continue researching till you gain experience in this area. Once you do, it will be easy to earn from exchanging foreign currencies and/or stocks. Their rates fluctuate depending on supply and demand, and economic and political influences in the world. The aim of any trader is to spot which currency/stock is likely to rise or fall in value against another. The more time you put in, the more you will earn.

Selling your own brand
If you have a flair for designing cool images, don't bother about creating your own inventory. As long as your design can be printed on a product, you can pocket some money. You can upload designs on various Websites such as CafePress, and if somebody orders these designs, the company will print them and distribute the products. It could be designs for T-shirts, hats, bags, books, posters, calendars, greeting cards, etc. You will receive a commission for each sale. Other such sites include Lulu and Zazzle.

Virtual Assistant
Small businesses always need help in running their processes, but may not be willing to hire a full-time employee. As a virtual assistant, you are expected to perform practically any administrative task that a traditional secretary or assistant would, such as make travel reservations, handle expense reimbursements or pay bills. You can do it from the comfort of your home, interacting with clients either online or by phone. Your expertise will decide how much moolah you rake in.

Inbound call centre
Many companies, who are facing space constraints, especially those in metro cities, prefer to hire workers outside their offices or outsource certain processes. You can set up an inbound call centre at home to handle such jobs. Research different companies that are outsourcing their work as they may have opportunities for inbound call centre agents. You can work for more than one company. This can be either a part-time or fulltime engagement, depending on your need.

You Tube
If there's a dramatic performer hidden inside you who craves applause and adulation, upload yourself on YouTube. You can be a filmmaker, musician or comedian who wants a wider audience. Your earnings will come from ads displayed on your video page. This process is similar to the pay-per-click advertising program common to other Websites and blogs. Sites such as Flixya and Mediaflix can be helpful in this regard.

Researching for others
Don't be morose if you can't write, design or code. Lack of talent cannot stop you from making money online. If you're willing to work hard for a few hours a week, you can take up simple research jobs for other people who don't have the time to do it themselves. You could search for opportunities in organisations that provide funding for research and offer to assist them through online investigation.

Building Applications
With smartphones gaining popularity, the demand for their applications, or apps as they are popularly known, has also shot up. There are over 3 million apps for the iPhone and over a million apps in Google's Android market. Most of these are selling like hot cakes. Developing and selling your own smartphone app is becoming a lucrative way to make money on the Internet. Apps cost virtually nothing to develop and entail no storage or shipping costs. So they enjoy the best profit margins.

Transcription
Medical transcription involves making written copies of oral material dictated by doctors or other medical experts. These may include history and physical reports, clinical notes, consultation notes, reports, letters, psychiatric evaluation and so on. The dictated material needs to be transcribed swiftly and accurately, which is the most challenging aspect of the job. To become a medical transcriptionist, you need to have a good knowledge of medical terminology and a high typing speed along with accuracy.

Ten of the best ... ways to make money from your desk

1. Get paid to surf the net

You surf the net all the time so why not make money every time you click on "search"? Yahoo powers searches which pay a small amount every time you run one – it is willing to do so because it wants to break down Google's domination. There is a search at Moneymagpiesearch.com. If you recommend your friends you will also make commission on their searches. The payments are small but we know people who have made around £30 in two months by searching regularly. You can choose whether you receive your money through PayPal or by bank transfer.

2. Take part in online surveys

Again, this is pocket money while you're on the internet, but it can be fun too. It is simply a case of answering questions about a particular product or company, or about your shopping habits. Be careful which surveys you use – some are fraudulent. Among the best of the genuine ones is panelbase.net, which will pay between 50p and £3 a survey, Valued Opinions, which pays between £1 and £5 a survey, and Ciao-surveys.co.uk, which pays up to £5.

3. Get paid for social networking

You can make money by keeping in touch with friends, and making more friends, on social networking site Yuwie. Set up a profile, write a blog, upload photos and videos and do what you usually do with any networking site. The difference with Yuwie is that it pays you to do all these things using advertising revenue. The amount you get paid depends on the number of times you and your friends view your pages. If you have lots of friends the views mount up and you can make some worthwhile cash.

4. Recycle your mobile

Have you got a useless old mobile in your desk drawer? Most of us have at least one hanging around the office or house, so make money from yours. Send it to Mopay and make between £2.50 and £200 depending on its make and condition. Even rubbishy old battered models can be worth a few quid if they can be sold on for spare parts.

5. Sell adverts on your blog

If you are a regular blogger and have built up a bit of a following, you could make money selling advertising around your posts. You can make cash quickly by putting Google Adsense on it. If you get enough traffic you make money every time people click on the ads. Blogs are also great for selling any products you have, promoting your services (it could be anything from sales training to web development or maternity care) and selling eBooks you have created yourself.

6. Sell your photos

If you have a nice collection of digital photos you could sell them over and over again through online agencies. Send them in to one or more agencies and any they like they will upload to the site. When people buy them you get a commission; you could end up getting paid for years to come. Picturenation say many of their photographers make hundreds of pounds a month, and some are simply good amateurs. Also try Fotolia and iStockphoto.

7. Rent out your stuff

Everyone knows about selling stuff on eBay, but how about renting it and making money over and over again? Sites like RentNotBuy.co.uk and RentRino will let you advertise anything from a baby bath to a ball gown. It is a new phenomenon, so it could be a while before anyone rents your power tools or your DVD player, but if you have a spare minute upload your details and later on you could make some regular cash.

8. Complain to gain

We don't complain enough in this country, which is one of the reasons why service can be so bad. However, those who complain constructively have worked out they can even make money through it. A well-crafted, reasonable letter including a request for financial compensation can make you money. Write to a company's CEO explaining the problem and set out the amount you feel you should receive in compensation. If it is refused write again, and even write a third time if necessary. Usually by the second or third letter they cave in and give you about half of what you were asking for.

9. Answer text questions

If you're a bit of a trivia king or queen you could make money by answering people's text questions. It is flexible work and you just have to be a bit knowledgeable and quick at searching the net (make extra by following point 1 above). On average, question answerers make about £10 an hour. The questions vary enormously: you could get anything from "Where's the nearest pizza place?" to "Who won the 1962 world cup?" and "Will I ever find love?". Visit ansanow or Textperts to see if you are quick enough to be part of their teams of knowledge hunters.

10. Get cashback

If you use your lunch hour to buy essentials, make sure you get paid to do it. Shop around first to find the best deals, then look on cashback sites to see if you could get money back by buying through them. Start with sites that give you instant cash just by signing up, such as Rpoints, which gives you £5, Cashback Shopper, which gives you £5, and ecashback, which gives you £2.50 immediately.

The Truth About Making Money Online

People make money online, for sure. But it's not the people you are thinking of.

Most small businesses are using the Internet in their business model, but in general, the Internet is a way to market products and a way to connect with people; it's not a get-rich-quick scheme.

Internet marketing requires all the same tools as old-media markets. For example, you need great visuals, you need a great story, you need some sort of connection to the gatekeepers of big audiences. You also need a great designer -- or a Web design firm that has a client list you like.

But most of the success you see online is a great looking front-end that disguises the real business going on behind the scenes. Here are the real ways that people are making money on the Internet.

1. Being great at SEO.
When the Huffington Post sold for millions of dollars, AOL bought not so much a news organization but an SEO organization. It's not that Huffington Post doesn't have news. But the news is simply a way to give their SEO people something to work with. Huffington Post doesn't have the best news, but they have the news most closely tailored to the keywords that people type into Google, so people feel that the news at HuffPo is the most relevant to them.

2. Write blog posts all day, nonstop.
The sweatshop labor of the 21st century is writing blog posts. Gawker Media, for example, has insightful, timely, non-stop commentary about popular topics online. But the type of person you need on staff in order to generate that type of content is a smart, organized, editorialist, with the ability to be on-call all day long. This is why profits are high at Gawker, but turnover is high as well.

3. Aggregate content.
Sugar, Inc. doesn't write content. The company aggregates it. Sugar is a set of sophisticated tools to move traffic around in a way that generates more traffic. Some people get traffic once, and they never see it again. Take a look, for example, at SavvySugar. The site is fine-tuned from a traffic management point of view -- viewers will always click more than once.

4. Sell your family.
Rhee Drummond might be the person making the most money on the Internet right now, with her site The Pioneer Woman. That is, she is a privately held company, without investors, and she is one of the highest trafficked sites online. How does she do it? She markets her own family. Their lifestyle. Their dinners. She has made a celebrity of herself and her kids, and while it seems appealing to be Internet famous, few people would actually enjoy that on a daily basis, and probably the only reason she can stomach it is that she lives on a ranch so far from civilization that they have their own landing strip.

5. Make great landing pages.
Let's say you don't want to devote your life to generating online content. Let's say you have some sort of widget you want to sell. In that case, it's not really about how good the product is, but rather how good the landing page is.

You can only really sell something that people search for on Google. Because how else would they ever find you? So they search for your type of product on Google and then land on your page and then what? You have to make them want to buy. So you are actually building a business that relies more on your landing page than on your product.

What's Next?
With the old model of the Internet in 1994, people paid the biggest salaries to the developers. I earned $100 an hour in the Fortune 500 writing HTML by hand. Coding was a mystery to most people back then, and I used to <nostalgia>dream in tags</nostalgia>.

Then, at the end of the millennium, content was king. The writers were making top-dollar online. That was when I pretty much cancelled my syndicated print column, even though it had run in about 200 newspapers, because Yahoo Finance was paying me $2,500 a week to write one single blog post. More than all those newspapers were paying combined.

Today there is out-of-the-box software to replace everyday coding needs. And payment for content online has calibrated itself to where newspapers were 20 years ago.

So what's next? All the business models working today have one thing in common: developing markets around keywords. Your business possibilities are not whatever you can dream up in your head. The business models today revolve around what other people dream up and type into Google.

So think in terms of undervalued keywords, low-cost content, and traffic arbitrage. These are the ways people really make money online. The rest is just marketing offline businesses.
